November 19, 2009 After trailing by seven with five minutes to go, the #18 Dayton Flyers rallied with a late run to beat the #21 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 63-59. Sophomore Paul Williams hit a go-ahead three and made all four free throws down the stretch to ice the game.The opener of the Puerto Rico Tip-off served as the first game of the 2009-2010 regular season that pitted two nationally ranked teams. Chris Johnson scored 19 points for the Flyers (2-0), going 4 for 8 from behind the 3-point line. His 11 first half points helped the Flyers grab a nine-point lead at the break. Luke Fabrizius added 12 points, connecting on four three-point shots off the bench. The Yellow Jackets (1-1) trailed 31-22 at halftime, but rallied to take a 57-50 lead with 4:37 to play on a layup by Zachery Peacock. Maurice Miller and Derrick Favors led Georgia Tech with 10 points apiece and Gani Lawal had eight rebounds. Dayton will advance to play the winner of the tournament's second game between No. 5 Villanova and George Mason tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. |
