Spartans beat Michigan, Ohio State for Kearney

DETROIT, Mich. - Michigan State coach Tom Izzo and the Spartan basketball team picked up their first commitment for the class of 2011 when Detroit Southeastern star Brandan Kearney selected the Spartans over a number of the top basketball programs in the Midwest.

Kearney made his decision public during a press conference this morning at his high school. The night before the press conference, Kearney took the time to discuss his decision with SpartanMag.com staffer Rico Beard.

Michigan State beat out in-state rival Michigan, and Big Ten rivals Ohio State and Minnesota for the commitment of Kearney. The Southeastern standout also considered Florida International University, SMU, Syracuse, and Georgetown among others.

Kearney said Izzo was a significant part of his decision to play for the Spartans. Michigan State also proved to be the best fit for the Southeastern star.
